Metering and Monitoring Information

In addition to main meters that track whole campus usage for utility providers (see Campus Energy Data), Energy Management manages and maintains an internal, campus-owned, sub-metering system that monitors electric, natural gas, water, and irrigation use at the building level. This allows us to track utility costs of different campus units and benchmark and audit buildings to plan, verify, and monitor energy efficiency project opportunities.

Energy Management has over 1,400 active meters. Our automated meters include 500 water meters reporting continuously to Beacon, 80 electric eGauge meters, 80 electric ION meters, and 30 electric meters that report to BMS’s Tridium database. Our student team manually reads the remaining 800 electric, natural gas, water, and irrigation meters.

Student staff aid in much of the metering process, from data collection to meter troubleshooting and retrofits. These students support the tremendous amount of work required to collect, review, and report on this data. In return, they gain professional skills and knowledge about energy management.

Any currently available student positions will be posted on Handshake!

All data from the campus sub-metering system is available upon request – manual reads in monthly intervals and automated reads in hourly or quarter-hourly. If you are interested in accessing metering information or data, please put a request in to Patrick Testoni and include the following information:

  • Building or building CAAN number
  • Utility type
  • Time range

Please note: by default, monthly data will be provided; however, some data is available in smaller intervals (either hourly or 15 minutes). If you are interested in detailed data for a meter, please clearly note this in your request.

If you are specifically interested in water/irrigation data, you can email us to request a login to the Badger Beacon website. Please note whether you are a facility manager or other user interested in multiple buildings, or a recharge customer only interested in billing data for your particular meter.
