Water Leak Detection

Summary

Energy Management uses water meter monitoring software Beacon to identify potential water leaks in campus buildings and irrigation systems. Our dedicated leak detection student intern reviews trends and reports verified leaks to campus plumbing. In one year of the program we have saved 3,600,000 gallons, which would fill over half of the East Field House Pool! If you see a potential leak on campus (dripping faucet, running toilet, or unexpected pool of water), please submit a Work Order at https://ches.ucsc.edu/cruzfix/.

Our water meter monitoring software Beacon uses interval data to flag buildings that have an unexpected continuous flow. Using a knowledge of campus buildings, our leak detection student intern reviews flags and reports verified leaks to campus plumbing and irrigation teams. Example leak profile below:

In just one year of the program, we have helped identify and resolve 59,000 gallons/day worth of leaks – which would fill almost 850 bathtubs every day. Over a full year, this would fill over half of the East Remote Pool! This has saved the university over $2,300/day in avoided water costs (not including any avoided water damage costs). We encourage students, staff, and faculty to report any water leaks they see! Look for dripping faucets or showers, listen for continuously running toilets, and submit a Work Order if you see unexpected pools of water or moisture.
