The University has started preparing a Wildfire Vegetation Management Plan (Plan) for the Main Residential Campus and the Coastal Science Campus. The Plan is being prepared to optimize strategic vegetation treatments and enhance ecosystems across the campus landscape, promoting resilience against wildfires and the overall effects of climate change. The Plan is required mitigation in the 2021 Long Range Development Plan Environmental Impact Report (LRDP EIR).
Project Objective: The main objective of the Plan is to provide for healthy, resilient, and fire-adapted ecosystems that reduce the severity of catastrophic wildfire and increase protection for the campus community and health of the forest ecosystem.
CEQA Review: In conjunction with the Plan, the University is also preparing an Addendum to the California Vegetation Treatment Program Environmental Impact Report (CalVTP EIR). The CalVTP EIR is used to expedite review for subsequent projects that have similar impacts and mitigation.
A Project Specific Analysis (PSA), a checklist-based evaluation of whether a vegetation treatment project qualifies as within the scope of the CalVTP Program EIR, will be prepared. The PSA is designed to help public agencies, such as the University streamline implementation of vegetation treatments consistent with the CalVTP to reduce wildfire risks.
Community and Campus Meetings
The goal of an open house is to collaborate with the campus and local community regarding long-term vegetation management with the goal of creating healthy landscapes and fire-adapted ecosystems.
